&
Romance With a Double Bass
23rd September - 2nd November 2010
Our familiar Chekhovian heroine, Sofya, finds herself at a crossroads; she’s 23, married to Volodya, a man older than her father, and drinking more than perhaps a lady should. Admiring her friend Olga’s decision to join a convent, Sofya finds solace in visiting her where she confesses that she is still in love with her child hood sweetheart, also named Volodya. Sofya longs for something to believe in, an alternative to her two Volodyas, and she hopes to find it in one word, just one word…
“Oh, if only you knew how I want to change, to begin another life! To be good, honest and pure…To have some goal in life, some objective, some dream…”
In Romance with a Double Bass, Pitsikatov is a young musician on his way to a Royal engagement. However, his journey soon takes a farcical turn, when he falls in love, loses his double bass and finds he only has a top hat to preserve his modesty.
Two new plays by Carol Rocamora inspired by two of Anton Chekhov’s short stories.
